Parsec Awards

Well, well, well…looky what we have here. Looks like Technorama is a finalist in the ParsecAwards! I don’t know what we did to deserve this (besides podcasting) but I know I speak for Chuck when I say this is a great honor and we are humbled to be included in the Parsecs, much less a finalist.

If you are not familiar with the Parsec Awards, it is an award to celebrate Speculative Fiction Podcasting.

Podcast shows are nominated by fans, and finalists are chosen by a yearly steering committee. Those finalists are then voted on by an independent panel of judges from outside of podcasting. Awards are given in several categories ranging from content to audio quality.

Here is the complete list of finalists and we encourage you to congratulate every one of them.

Oh! If you are at Dragon*Con and want to attend the Parsec Awards Ceremony here are the details.

Home Hack: Cheap Whiteboard Erasers

Working from home means I sometimes have to things most office workers take for granted. Here’s one of my recent favorites… used dryer sheets make great whiteboard erasers. FYI – they only work if you use a dry erase (whiteboard) marker!

OK, I don’t really have a whiteboard, I use  the windows on the sliding doors of our sunroom. (There’s a LOT of window space and it somehow makes me feel more like a scientist!) When I first started drawing on the windows, I used tissues to erase tasks, diagrams, etc., but noticed it left behind a lot of dust. One day I spotted a used dryer sheet in the waste basket, pulled it out and tried it. The fibers on that thing were amazingly effective. What’s more, I can use a sheet several times before it’s all full of red marker dust. Since our family of four does quite a bit of laundry, I’ve got a never ending supply of “erasers”. In a strange way, I feel I’m recycling by using something one more time that would otherwise considered as garbage.

THE Rube Goldberg Machine for Photogs

Found this posted in one of my photog mailing lists. It’s kinda geeky even if you’re not into the photo gear collecting syndrome. But if you are into it, you’ve gotta see this. You’ll say to yourself “oh I’ve got that”, “… and that”, “ooh I want that”, and “seriously, who has that many gorillapods?”

You can see the teasers and behind the scenes video at 2D Photography Inc.

Review: Falling Skies – Pilot

Quick review of a new show on TNT. I read the back story in USA Today last week and decided to set the DVR. After all, a story about people surviving a devastating alien attack sounded like a good premise to me.

Falling Skies is on Sunday night. The 2 hour pilot aired June 19, and additional episodes will be on Sunday nights 10E/9C. I watched the pilot in two parts (Sunday and Monday nights.) What I liked about part 1 is that they didn’t spend their first hour explaining how we got to this point. It was revealed through the story, but the more I thought about it, the more it felt like a repurposed story line. Very “BSG-esque”, a-la “our world has been attacked. most of the people are dead. this rag-tag band of survivors continues to fight back while eaking out an existence and dealing with the personal conflicts.” It was a bit disappointing at first.

The second part started to reveal some of the situations they get in to when the group encounters some outlaws who are looking to steal some of the main group’s goodies. If the writers can continue to do what they did on the second show while not dragging us in to the back story (which is pretty obvious), I’ll enjoy it. It’s something different for the summer months.

I look forward to the next few episodes and will keep you informed. Give it a watch and let me know what you think.
