- It was on this date in 1868 that New Zealand officially adopts a standard time to be observed nationally
- The first gasoline-powered race in the United States was held today in 1895. The first prize was $2,000
- In the United States, KDKA of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania starts broadcasting as the first commercial radio station on this date in 1920. The first broadcast is the result of the 1920 U.S. presidential election.
- Today in 1936 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is established.
- The British Broadcasting Corporation initiates the BBC Television Service, the world’s first regular, “high-definition” service today in 1936. Back then, “high definition” was defined as at least 200 lines. The service was renamed BBC1 in1964, the channel still runs to this day.
- This is the date in 1947 that designer Howard Hughes performs the maiden (and only) flight of the H-4 The Hercules aka the “Spruce Goose”; the largest fixed-wing aircraft ever built.
- The first internet-distributed computer worm, The Morris Worm, to gain significant mainstream media attention, is launched from MIT today in 1988.
- and on this date in 2000, the first resident crew to the ISS docked in November 2nd on the Soyuz TM-31.
