On This Day in history for September 2nd, 2026. This is the 245th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. There are 120 days remaining in 2026.
- It was on this date in 1752 that Great Britain, along with its overseas possessions, officially adopted the Gregorian calendar.
- Moving to 1859, Earth was hit by the Carrington Event, the strongest geomagnetic storm ever recorded.
- In 1963, the CBS Evening News expanded from 15 to 30 minutes, becoming American network television’s first half-hour weeknight news broadcast.
- A few years later in 1970, NASA announced the cancellation of two planned Apollo missions to the Moon, Apollo 15 and Apollo 19.
- Fast forward to 1987, when the trial began in Moscow for 19-year-old pilot Mathias Rust, who famously flew his Cessna airplane into Red Square.
- And in 2008, Google officially launched its web browser, Google Chrome.

- American educator and astronaut Christa McAuliffe was born 78 years ago today.
