Today is October 7th, 2026, the 280th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar, with 85 days remaining.

  • Let’s start our journey through time by traveling all the way back to 3761 BC, which marks the traditional epoch reference date and start of the modern Hebrew calendar.
  • In 1477, Uppsala University was inaugurated in Sweden, having received its corporate rights from Pope Sixtus IV earlier that year.
  • Moving ahead to 1826, the Granite Railway began operations in Massachusetts, cementing its place in history as the first chartered railway in the United States.
  • In 1912, the Helsinki Stock Exchange witnessed its very first transaction.
  • Just one year later, in 1913, the Ford Motor Company revolutionized manufacturing by introducing the world’s first moving vehicle assembly line.
  • Then in 1919, KLM, the flag carrier of the Netherlands, was founded, making it the oldest airline still operating under its original name today.
  • In 1958, America’s crewed space-flight project officially got a new name, becoming known to the world as Project Mercury.
  • A year after that, in 1959, the Soviet space probe Luna 3 made history by transmitting the first-ever photographs of the far side of the Moon.
  • In 1996, a new player entered the media landscape as the Fox News Channel began broadcasting for the first time.
  • And in 2002, the Space Shuttle Atlantis launched on mission STS-112, heading up to continue the assembly of the International Space Station.

Happy birthday goes out on this date to:

  • Also born on this date, 107 years ago, was American computer scientist and academic Henriette Avram.
  • The beloved South African archbishop and activist, Nobel Prize laureate Desmond Tutu, would have celebrated his 95th birthday today.
  • We also celebrate John Hopcroft, the esteemed American computer scientist and author, who is turning 87 today.
  • Scottish physicist and academic David Wallace is also celebrating, turning 81 today.
  • And American computer scientist and author Ralph Johnson is turning 71 today.
