- That same date in 1936, Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal at the games in the Summer Olympics
- Mars 7 was launched from the USSR on this date in 1973
- It was on this date in 1974, that As a direct result of the Watergate scandal, Richard Nixon became the first President of the United States to resign from office. Vice President Gerald Ford became president.
