  • It was on this date in 28 BC, that a sunspot was observed by Han dynasty astronomers during the reign of Emperor Cheng of Han, one of the earliest dated sunspot observations in China.
  • May 10, 1497, Amerigo Vespucci allegedly left Cádiz for his first voyage to the New World.
  • It was on this date in 1503, that Christopher Columbus visited the Cayman Islands and named them Las Tortugas after the numerous turtles there.
  • Also on May 10, 1869, The First transcontinental railroad, linking the eastern and western United States, was completed at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory with the golden spike.
