- It was on this date in 1782, that The Montgolfier brothers first test flew an unmanned hot air balloon in France; it floated nearly 2.5 km (1.6 mi).
- Also on December 14, 1900, Max Planck presented a theoretical derivation of his black-body radiation law in quantum theory at the Physic Society in Berlin.
- The Commercial Pacific Cable Company laid the first Pacific telegraph cable, from San Francisco to Honolulu. on this date in 1902
- It was on this date in 1903, that The Wright brothers made their first attempt to fly with the Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
- Also on December 14, 1918, The 1918 United Kingdom general election occurred, the first where women were permitted to vote.
- It was on this date in 1940, that Plutonium (specifically Pu-238) was first isolated at Berkeley, California
