  • It was on this date in 1863, that a group of citizens of Geneva founded an International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, which later became known as the International Committee of the Red Cross.
  • It was 157 years ago today, that the H. L. Hunley became the first submarine to engage and sink a warship, the USS Housatonic.
  • That same date in 1867, The first ship passed through the Suez Canal.
  • On February 17, 1933, Newsweek magazine was first published.
  • That same date in 1959, the first weather satellite was launched to measure cloud-cover distribution.
  • On February 17, 1965, the Ranger 8 probe launched on its mission to photograph the Mare Tranquillitatis region of the Moon in preparation for the manned Apollo missions. Mare Tranquillitatis or the “Sea of Tranquility” would become the site chosen for the Apollo 11 lunar landing.
  • That same date in 1972, Cumulative sales of the Volkswagen Beetle exceeded those of the Ford Model T.
  • On February 17, 1996, NASA’s Discovery Program began as the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft lifted off on the first mission ever to orbit and land on an asteroid, 433 Eros.

  • Also born on that same date in 1981,  American model, media personality, actress, singer, DJ, author and businesswoman, Paris Hilton.
