On this day in history for May 11, 2011

• It was on this date in

1502 that Christopher Columbus leaves for his fourth and final voyage to the West Indies.

• The launch of HMS Beagle, the ship that took Charles Darwin on his scientific voyage took place today in 1820
• 87 years ago Mercedes-Benz is formed by Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz merging their two companies.
• It was just 24 years ago in Baltimore, Maryland, that the first heart–lung transplant takes place. The surgery is performed by Dr. Bruce Reitz of the Stanford University School of Medicine.
• In New York City in 1995 more than 170 countries decide to extend the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty indefinitely and without conditions.
• The 1996 Everest disaster happened. Eight people die during summit attempts in a single day on Mount Everest.
• And exactly one year later in 1997, IBM Deep Blue, a chess-playing supercomputer, defeats Garry Kasparov in the last game of the rematch, becoming the first computer to beat a world-champion chess player in a classic match format.

• American astronomer Frank Schlesinger born today in 1871
• Also born today in 1875, American aviator Harriet Quimby
• May 11 1914 is also the birthday of French volcanologist Haroun Tazieff
• English radio astronomer and Nobel laureat Antony Hewish turns 87 today
• Famous Dutch computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra was born today in 1930
• and our final birthday goes out to Dr. Robert Jarvik, the American Physician and inventor of the Jarvik artificial heart. He turns 65 today.

This also happens to be National Technology Day in India in memory of five nuclear tests that took place on May 11 and May 13th 1998. Various awards are given on May 11 to celebrate individuals in the areas of science and technology.
