This is the 266th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. There are 99 days remaining in 2015. It is frequently the day of the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the day of the vernal equinox in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • It was on this date in 1338 that The Battle of Arnemuiden was the first naval battle of the Hundred Years’ War and the first naval battle using artillery, as the English ship Christofer had three cannon and one handgun.
  • That same date in 1642 saw the first commencement exercises occur at Harvard College.
  • September 23, 1806, Lewis and Clark return to St. Louis after exploring the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
  • It was 170 years ago today that The Knickerbockers Baseball Club, the first baseball team to play under the modern rules, is founded in New York.
  • That same date in 1846, Astronomers Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier, John Couch Adams and Johann Gottfried Galle collaborate on the discovery of Neptune.
  • Today in 1911, pilot Earle Ovington makes the first official airmail delivery in America under the authority of the United States Post Office Department

  • It was 83 years ago today that The Kingdom of Hejaz and Nejd is renamed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts opens in New York City 53 years ago today.
  • It was 35 years ago today that Bob Marley plays what would be his last concert in Pittsburgh.
  • Today in 1999, NASA announces that it has lost contact with the Mars Climate Orbiter.
  • It was 13 years ago today that The first public version of the web browser Mozilla Firefox (“Phoenix 0.1”) is released.
