This is the 203rd day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. There are 162 days remaining in 2026.

  • It was on this date in 1598, that William Shakespeare’s play, The Merchant of Venice, was entered on the Stationers’ Register. By decree of Queen Elizabeth, the Stationers’ Register licensed printed works, giving the Crown tight control over all published material.
  • 320 years ago today, The Acts of Union 1707 were agreed upon by commissioners from the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland, which, when passed by each country’s Parliament, led to the creation of the Kingdom of Great Britain.
  • It was 233 years ago today that Alexander Mackenzie reached the Pacific Ocean becoming the first recorded human to complete a transcontinental crossing of North America.
  • On July 22, 1893, Katharine Lee Bates wrote “America the Beautiful” after admiring the view from the top of Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs, Colorado.
  • 132 years ago today, The first ever motor race was held in France between the cities of Paris and Rouen. The fastest finisher was the Comte Jules-Albert de Dion, but the “official” victory was awarded to Albert Lemaître driving his three-horsepower petrol engined Peugeot.
  • Aviator Wiley Post returned to Floyd Bennett Field in New York City, completing the first solo flight around the world in seven days, 18 hours and 49 minutes on this date in 1933.
  • Also on July 22, 1951, Soviet space dogs Dezik and Tsygan were launched into a sub-orbital spaceflight from Kapustin Yar and became the first dogs to fly in space and the first to safely return.
  • Also today in 1962, Mariner program: Mariner 1 spacecraft flew erratically several minutes after launch and had to be destroyed.
  • It was also this date in 2019 that Chandrayaan-2, the second lunar exploration mission developed by Indian Space Research Organisation after Chandrayaan-1 was launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in a GSLV Mark III M1. It consists of a lunar orbiter, and also included the Vikram lander, and the Pragyan lunar rover.

  • Canadian actor, director, and producer, Colin Ferguson is 54 today.
