- It was on this date in 1755, that Samuel Johnson’s “A Dictionary of the English Language” was published in London.
- Also today in 1817, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc founded the American School for the Deaf (then called the Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons), the first American school for deaf students, in Hartford, Connecticut.
- It was also this date in 1892 that The General Electric Company was formed.
- It was 114 years ago today that The British passenger liner RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic at 2:20 a.m., two hours and forty minutes after hitting an iceberg. Only 710 of 2,224 passengers and crew on board survive.
- It was also this date in 1923 that Insulin became generally available for use by people with diabetes.
- Also on April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking baseball’s color line.
- It was 74 years ago today that saw the First flight of the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress.
- McDonald’s restaurant dated its founding to the opening of a franchised restaurant by Ray Kroc, in Des Plaines, Illinois on this date in 1955.
