- It was on this date in 1565, that Pedro Menéndez de Avilés sighted land near St. Augustine, Florida and founded the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in the continental United States.
- August 28, 1609, Henry Hudson discovered Delaware Bay.
- That same date in 1830, The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s new Tom Thumb steam locomotive raced a horse-drawn car, presaging steam’s role in U.S. railroads.
- It was also this date in 1845 that The first issue of Scientific American magazine was published.
- The Carrington event was the strongest geomagnetic storm on record to strike the Earth. Electrical telegraph service was widely disrupted on this date in 1859.
- It was on this date in 1898, that Caleb Bradham’s beverage “Brad’s Drink” was renamed “Pepsi-Cola”.
