- It was on this date in 1822, that Jean-François Champollion officially informed the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres in France that he had deciphered the Rosetta Stone.
- 198 years ago today, The world’s first public railway to use steam locomotives, the Stockton and Darlington Railway, was ceremonially opened.
- That same date in 1908, Production of the Model T automobile began at the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit
- It was 85 years ago today, that The ocean liner Queen Elizabeth was launched in Glasgow
- On September 27, 1941, The SS Patrick Henry was launched, becoming the first of more than 2,700 Liberty ships
- Also on September 27, 1956, USAF Captain Milburn G. Apt became the first person to exceed Mach 3. Shortly thereafter, the Bell X-2 goes out of control and Captain Apt is killed
- The British TSR-2 aircraft XR219 made its maiden flight on this date in 1964
- That same date in 1998, The Google internet search engine retroactively claimed this date as its birthday
- Also on September 27, 2003, The SMART-1 satellite was launched.

- Born September 27, 1947, American singer-songwriter, producer, and actor Meat Loaf.
- Also turning 71 today is Romanian pilot, engineer and cosmonaut Dumitru Prunariu.
- American computer programmer and author, Larry Wall, born on this date in 1954.
- Also turning 59 today is American computer scientist and academic Tracy Camp.
- American engineer and astronaut, Stephanie Wilson, born on this date in 1966.
- American video game designer and dancer, Matt Harding is 47 today.
