  • It was on this date in 1822, that Jean-François Champollion officially informed the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres in France that he had deciphered the Rosetta Stone.
  • 198 years ago today, The world’s first public railway to use steam locomotives, the Stockton and Darlington Railway, was ceremonially opened.
  • That same date in 1908, Production of the Model T automobile began at the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit
  • It was 85 years ago today, that The ocean liner Queen Elizabeth was launched in Glasgow
  • On September 27, 1941, The SS Patrick Henry was launched, becoming the first of more than 2,700 Liberty ships
  • Also on September 27, 1956, USAF Captain Milburn G. Apt became the first person to exceed Mach 3. Shortly thereafter, the Bell X-2 goes out of control and Captain Apt is killed
