This is  the 148th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. There are 217 days remaining in 2014.

  • It was on this date in 585 BC that a solar eclipse occurs, as predicted by the Greek philosopher and scientist Thales, while Alyattes is battling Cyaxares in the Battle of Halys, leading to a truce. This is one of the cardinal dates from which other dates can be calculated.
  • That same date in 1892 – In San Francisco, California, John Muir organizes the Sierra Club.
  • Alan Turing submits On Computable Numbers for publication today in 1936.
  • That same date Klaipėda Radio Station begins regular broadcasting.
  • and one year later, The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, is officially opened by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Washington, D.C., who pushes a button signaling the start of vehicle traffic over the span.
  • While Franklin D was doing that, Volkswagen (VW), the German automobile manufacturer was founded.
  • 12 years ago today, the Mars Odyssey finds signs of large ice deposits on the planet Mars.
  • and just two years ago, the discovery of Flame, a complex malware program targeting computers in Middle Eastern countries, is announced.

Happy birthday goes out on this date to

  • Italian mathematician Jacopo Riccati born on this date in 1676
  • The man who developed the blow torch, Carl Richard Nyberg, was born today in 1858.
  • Also celebrating his birthday today in 1879, Serbian mathematician, astronomer, and geophysicist, Milutin Milanković
  • and finally Ruby Payne-Scott, the Australian physicist and astronomer would have been 102 today.

And that’s the way it was, on this day in history for May 28, 2014
