This is July 31. It is the 212th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. There are 153 days remaining in 2013.

  • It was on this date in 1498 that Christopher Columbus becomes the first European to discover the island of Trinidad on his third voyage to the Western Hemisphere.
  • That same date in 1790 – The first U.S. patent is issued, to inventor Samuel Hopkins for a potash process.
  • The first narrow gauge mainline railway in the world opens at Grandchester, Queensland, Australia today in 1865.
  • July 31, 1930 – The radio mystery program The Shadow airs for the first time.
  • Exactly one year later – New York, New York experimental television station W2XAB (now known as WCBS) begins broadcasting.
  • Archaeologists discover engraved gold and silver plates from King Darius the Great in Persepolis on this date in 1938.
  • It was also on this date in 1954 that saw the first ascent of K2, by an Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio.
  • 49 years ago today – Ranger 7 sends back the first close-up photographs of the moon, with images 1,000 times clearer than anything ever seen from earth-bound telescopes.
  • Apollo 15 astronauts become the first to ride in a lunar rover on this date in 1971.
  • 14 years ago as part of the Discovery Program: NASA intentionally crashes the Lunar Prospector spacecraft into the Moon, thus ending its mission to detect frozen water on the moon’s surface.
