  • Venera 4 is launched on June 12, 1967. It will become the first space probe to enter another planet’s atmosphere and successfully return data.
  • 35 years ago today, David Berkowitz, the “Son of Sam” killer in New York City, is sentenced to 365 years in prison for six killings.
  • It was June 12, 1979 when Bryan Allen wins the second Kremer prize for a man powered flight across the English Channel in the Gossamer Albatross.
  • 26 years ago today at the Brandenburg Gate U.S. President Ronald Reagan publicly challenges Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall.
  • 3 years later,1990 the parliament of the Russian Federation formally declares its sovereignty – creating “Russia Day”.
  • and exactly one year after that in 1991 – Russians elect Boris Yeltsin as the president of the republic.
  • 19 years ago today– Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman are murdered outside her home in Los Angeles, California. O.J. Simpson is later acquitted of the killings, but is held liable in wrongful death civil suit.
  • That same date in 1994 – The Boeing 777, the world’s largest twinjet, makes its first flight.
  • and today in 1997 – Queen Elizabeth II reopens the Globe Theatre in London.

  • Russian mathematician Vladimir Arnold is 76
  • The actor who played “Moss” on one our favorite shows “The IT Crowd” Richard Ayoade (eye-oh-ah-day,), is now 36
  • Also turning 36 today is singer-songwriter and guitarist – Kenny Wayne Shepherd
