- It was on this date in 1683 that the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England, opens as the world’s first university museum.
- Also today in 1822 – Alexis St. Martin was accidentally shot in the stomach, which leads way to William Beaumont’s studies on digestion.
- U.S. President Andrew Jackson becomes the first President to ride on a train today in 1833
- June 6, 1892 – Chicago ‘L’ begins operation
- Teenagers rejoice today in 1933 as the first drive-in theater opens, in Camden, New Jersey.
- Under a temporary order, the rocket launches at Cuxhaven, Germany, are terminated, though they never resume on this date in 1964.
- also today in 1971 – Soyuz 11 launches.
- Tetris, one of the best-selling video games of all-time, is released June 6, 1984
- and just 10 years ago today, a near-Earth asteroid estimated at 10 meters diameter explodes over the Mediterranean Sea between Greece and Libya. The resulting explosion is estimated to have a force of 26 kilotons, slightly more powerful than the Nagasaki atomic bomb.
