- It was on this date in 1569 that the first recorded lottery in England took place.
- William Herschel discovers Titania and Oberon, two moons of Uranus today in 1787
- Also today in 1838, Samuel Morse first successfully tests the electrical telegraph.
- The Grand Canyon National Monument is created on this date in 1908.
- and it was today in 1922 that saw the first use of insulin to treat diabetes in a human patient.
- On January 11, 1927 – Louis B. Mayer, head of film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), announced the creation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at a banquet in Los Angeles, California.
- Amelia Earhart is the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California today in 1935.
- Also today in 1949 – The first “networked” television broadcasts take place as KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They go on the air connecting the east coast and mid-west programming.
- It was that same date in 1949 that amazingly had the first recorded case of snowfall in Los Angeles, California.
- In Brisbane Queensland, Australia – The Gateway Bridge is officially opened today in 1986.
- And 16 years ago today, Space shuttlel mission STS-72 launches from the Kennedy Space Center marking the start of the 74th Space Shuttle mission and the 10th flight of Endeavour.

- Also born today in 1926, Soviet cosmonaut, Lev Demin
- And finally, Sir C. A. R. Hoare, British computer scientist turns 78 today.
