- It was on this date in 1534 that Jacques Cartier begins the voyage during which he discovers Canada and Labrador.
- Also today in 1535 marks the date of the Sun Dog phenomenon observed over Stockholm and depicted in the famous painting “Vädersolstavlan“
- Louis Pasteur and Claude Bernard complete the first pasteurization tests today in 1862.
- and in 1902 Pierre and Marie Curie refine radium chloride.
- it was also this day in 1926 that Western Electric and Warner Bros. announce Vitaphone, a process to add sound to film.
- Apollo 16, commanded by John Young, landed on the moon commanded by John Young 39 years ago.
- And on April 20, one year ago today – Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion kills 11 and causes the rig to sink, initiating a massive oil discharge in the Gulf of Mexico.
