  • Today in 1455 is the traditional date for the publication of the Gutenberg Bible, the first Western book printed with movable type.
  • Charles Martin Hall produced the first samples of man-made aluminum, after several years of intensive work on this date in 1886. He was assisted in this project by his older sister Julia Brainerd Hall.
  • The Federal Radio Commission (later renamed the Federal Communications Commission) begins to regulate the use of radio frequencies in the United States today in 1927
  • It was February 23 1941 that Plutonium is first produced and isolated by Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg.
  • Today marks the day in 1947 that the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is founded.
  • The first mass inoculation of children against polio with the Salk vaccine begins in Pittsburgh today in 1954.
  • It was also today in 1987 – Supernova 1987a is seen in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
  • A small fire occurs in the Russian Space station, Mir on this day in 1997.
