  • It  was on this date in 1896 that an Austrian newspaper reports that  Wilhelm Roentgen has discovered a type of radiation later known as  X-rays.
  • Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge begins in San Francisco Bay on this date in 1933
  • January 5, 1940 marks the first time that FM radio is demonstrated to the Federal Communications Commission.
  • That same date four years later, The Daily Mail becomes the first transoceanic newspaper.
  • On this date in 1972 – U.S. President Richard Nixon orders the development of a space shuttle program.
  • Just  six years ago, – Eris, the largest known dwarf planet in the solar  system, is discovered by the team of Michael E. Brown, Chad Trujillo,  and David L. Rabinowitz using images originally taken on October 21,  2003, at the Palomar Observatory.
