- It was on this date in 1652 – At the Cape of Good Hope, Dutch sailor Jan van Riebeeck establishes a resupply camp that eventually becomes Cape Town .
- Celluloid is patented today in 1869
- Today in 1909, Robert Peary and Matthew Henson allegedly reach the North Pole.
- Varney Airlines makes its first commercial flight on this date in 1926. (Varney is the root company of United Airlines).
- Launch of Early Bird, the first communications satellite, the Early Bird, is launched today and later placed in geosynchronous orbit today in 1965.
- That same day in 1965, the British Government announces the cancellation of the TSR-2 aircraft project.
- and the Pioneer 11 spacecraft is launched today in 1973 to explore the asteroid belt, Jupiter, and Saturn.
