  • It was on this date in 1811 that the first steamboat to sail the Mississippi River arrives in New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • That same date in 1847, German inventor and industrialist Werner von Siemens founds Siemens AG & Halske.
  • October 1, 1854 – The watch company founded in 1850 in Roxbury by Aaron Lufkin Dennison relocates to Waltham, Massachusetts, to become the Waltham Watch Company, a pioneer in the American system of watch manufacturing.
  • First electric lamp factory is opened by Thomas Edison today in 1880.
  • 106 years ago, Ford puts the Model T car on the market for the “princely sum” of US$825.
  • Today in 1931 – The George Washington Bridge linking New Jersey and New York opens.
  • First flight of the Bell XP-59 “Aircomet” was today in 1942.
  • Exactly five years later, another maiden flight. This time it was the North American F-86 Sabre in 1947.
  • It was this date in 1958 that NASA is created to replace NACA.
  • Concorde breaks the sound barrier for the first time today 45 years ago.
  • Walt Disney World opens near Orlando, Florida, on this date in 1971
  • 11 years later to the date – EPCOT Center opens at Walt Disney World.
  • Sony launches the first consumer compact disc player (model CDP-101) today in 1982.
  • And one of my favorite cable channels, Cartoon Network, starts broadcasting on this date 1992!

  • Hélio Gracie, Brazilian martial artist would have been 101 today.
  • A couple actors were born on October 1st: Actor and singer Walter Matthau was born today in 1920

  • rounding out the birthdays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter turns 90 years old today.
