- It was on this date in 1777, that Kiritimati, also called Christmas Island, was discovered by James Cook.
- That same date in 1818, The first performance of “Silent Night” took place in the Nikolauskirche in Oberndorf, Austria.
- Also on December 24, 1906, Reginald Fessenden transmitted the first radio broadcast; consisting of a poetry reading, a violin solo, and a speech.
- 73 years ago today was the first flight of Britain’s Handley Page Victor strategic bomber.
- That same date in 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 entered into orbit around the Moon, becoming the first humans to do so. They performed ten lunar orbits, took the Earthrise photograph, broadcast live TV pictures, and read the first ten verses of Genesis.
- The first Ariane 1 rocket was launched from ELA-1 at the Guiana Space Centre. on this date in 1979.
