• It was on this date in 1493, that Christopher Columbus went ashore on an island called Borinquen he first saw the day before. He named it San Juan Bautista (later renamed again Puerto Rico).
• It was 209 years ago today that Warsaw University was established.
• Also today in 1881, A meteorite landed near the village of Grossliebenthal, southwest of Odesa, Ukraine.
• It was 109 years ago today that Samuel Goldwyn and Edgar Selwyn established Goldwyn Pictures.
• It was also this date in 1967 that saw the establishment of TVB, the first wireless commercial television station in Hong Kong.
• Apollo 12 astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean landed at Oceanus Procellarum (the “Ocean of Storms”) and became the third and fourth humans to walk on the Moon on this date in 1969.
• Also today in 1996, Space Shuttle Columbia was launched on STS-80, which would become the longest mission in the program at 17 days. On this mission, astronaut Story Musgrave becomes the only astronaut to fly on all five space shuttles.
• Exactly one year later, Space Shuttle Columbia was launched on STS-87.

• Belgian computer programmer, Dries Buytaert, born on this date in 1978.
