Re: Digg 101.
You shouldn’t answer questions phrased in the form “Why would someone need X”. The question itself is rigged to shoot down X.
If you wish to respond affirmatively, say “I use X because I like Y.” For Digg, I would say that I find all of my favorite stories and links there.
In addition, don’t try to explain to the layperson why or how X works. “Social bookmarking” just flies over the head of the public. I know your target audience is a bit more narrow that the general public, but geeks have apathy too.
In some ways, it’s a lot like explaining podcasting. You wouldn’t spark much interest by talking about RSS enclosures, feed aggregators, or time-shifted audio content.
