- The Mount Washington Cog Railway opens on August 29, 1869, making it the world’s first rack railway.
- The Goodyear tire company is founded 97 years ago today.
- Also on this date in 1907 – The Quebec Bridge collapses during construction, killing 75 workers.
- August 29, 1915 – The US Navy salvage divers raise F-4, the first U.S. submarine sunk in accident.
- Today in 1922 – The first radio advertisement is broadcast on WEAF-AM in New York City.
- The Soviet Union tests its first atomic bomb on this date in 1949, known as First Lightning or Joe 1, at Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan.
- The Gemini V spacecraft returns to Earth, landing in the Atlantic ocean 30 years ago.
