\"\"<\/a>Jill\u00a0Tarter\u00a0holds the Bernard M.\u00a0Oliver Chair for SETI Research\u00a0at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California\u00a0and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for that institution. She received her Bachelor of Engineering Physics Degree with Distinction from Cornell University and her Master\u2019s Degree and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley.<\/p>\n

Dr. Tarter has spent the majority of her professional career attempting to answer the age old human question \u201cAre we alone?\u201d by searching for evidence of technological civilizations beyond Earth.<\/p>\n

She served as Project Scientist for NASA\u2019s SETI program, the High Resolution Microwave Survey and\u00a0has conducted numerous observational programs at radio observatories worldwide.\u00a0She is a Fellow of the AAAS,\u00a0the California Academy of Sciences, and the Explorers Club, she was named one of the\u00a0Time\u00a0100\u00a0Most Influential People in the World\u00a0in 2004,\u00a0and one of the\u00a0Time 25\u00a0in Space in 2012,\u00a0received a TED prize in 2009,\u00a0two\u00a0public service awards from NASA,\u00a0multiple awards for communicating science to the public, and has been honored as a woman in technology.<\/p>\n

She was the 2014 Jansky Lecturer. In 2015-16 she served as\u00a0President of the California Academy of Sciences. There\u2019s even an asteroid –\u00a074824\u00a0Tarter\u00a0(1999 TJ16) named in her honor.<\/p>\n

Since the termination of funding for NASA\u2019s SETI program in 1993, she has served in a leadership role\u00a0to design and build the Allen Telescope Array and\u00a0to secure\u00a0private funding to continue the\u00a0exploratory science\u00a0of SETI. Many people are now familiar with her work as portrayed by Jodie Foster in the movie Contact.<\/p>\n
