On This Day In History for October 22, 2014

This is the 295th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. There are 70 days remaining in 2014.

  • It was on this date in 1746 – The College of New Jersey (later renamed Princeton University) receives its charter.
  • That same date in 1797 – André-Jacques Garnerin makes the first recorded parachute jump from one thousand meters (3,200 feet) above Paris.
  • October 22, 1875 saw the first telegraphic connection in Argentina.
  • Using a filament of carbonized thread, Thomas Edison tests the first practical electric incandescent light bulb (it lasted 13½ hours before burning out). That was today in 1879.
  • Toastmasters International is founded October 22, 1924.
  • 88 years ago today, J. Gordon Whitehead sucker punches magician Harry Houdini in the stomach in Montreal, precipitating his death.
  • Nikola Tesla was a busy man today in 1927 when he introduces six new inventions including a motor with one phase electricity
  • The Soviet Union launches Luna 12 on this date in 1966.
  • Another space milestone today in 1968 – Apollo 7 safely splashes down in the Atlantic Ocean after orbiting the Earth 163 times.
  • One more for the space books… The Soviet unmanned space mission Venera 9 lands on Venus 39 years ago.
  • It was 1976 – Red Dye No. 4 is banned by the US Food and Drug Administration after it is discovered that it causes tumors in the bladders of dogs. The dye is still used in Canada.
  • And it’s already been six years since India launches its first unmanned lunar mission Chandrayaan-1.

Happy birthday goes out on this date to:

  • German astronomer and mathematician, Erasmus Reinhold born on this date in 1511.
  • Estonian astronomer and astrophysicist, Ernst Öpik was also born today in 1893.
  • October 22, 1921 is also the birthday of Russian mathematician and computer scientist Alexander Kronrod
  • Former mouseketeer, Annette Funicello would have been 72.
  • Attempted assassin of Gerald Ford and Charles Manson follower, Lynette Fromme turns 66.
  • And rounding out our birthdays, actor Jeff Goldblum is 62 today.
  • Finally, this is International Stuttering Awareness Day

And that’s the way it was, on this day in history for October 22, 2014
