  • Also today in 1851 – Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery serial, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly, starts a ten-month run in the National Era abolitionist newspaper.
  • The first regularly scheduled Orient Express departs Paris started on June 5, 1883.
  • That same date in 1956 – Elvis Presley introduces his new single, “Hound Dog”, on The Milton Berle Show, scandalizing the audience with his suggestive hip movements.
  • DSV Alvin is commissioned 49 years ago today.
  • It was June 5, 1976 that saw the collapse of the Teton Dam in Idaho, in the United States.
  • The Apple II, one of the first personal computers, goes on sale today in 1977
  • And in 1995 – The Bose-Einstein condensate is first created.
