  • It was on this date in 1492 that Christopher Columbus becomes the first European to set foot on the island of Hispaniola, now Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
  • Also on that same date in 1766 – In London, James Christie holds his first sale.
  • December 5, 1848 in a message before the U.S. Congress, US President James K. Polk confirms that large amounts of gold had been discovered in California.
  • German-born Swiss physicist Albert Einstein is granted an American visa today in 1932
  • Flight 19 is lost in the Bermuda Triangle 67 years ago today
  • Subscriber Trunk Dialling (STD) is inaugurated on this date in 1958 in the UK by Queen Elizabeth II when she speaks to the Lord Provost in a call from Bristol to Edinburgh.
  • Also on that same date, the Preston bypass, the UK’s first stretch of motorway, opens to traffic for the first time. It is now part of the M6 and M55 motorways.
  • The last of the ARPANET Nodes closed today in 1969.
